Rescue Me

Abandoned Vacant Newburgh HomesPretty sure this photo was taken over on Courtney. What really peaked my interest of this abandoned home was the third floor in the back. It almost looks like an extension that was done a long time ago. My guess would be that although the home looks small in the front, there is probably lots of square footage in the back. Newburgh is New York State’s second largest historic district after NYC. Newburgh literally has hundreds of dilapidated and abandoned buildings just begging for someone to come scoop them up and restore them.I’ll continue to post my own photos, but if you have a particular building you would like to see saved, email me the photo of any building you appreciate that you would like to see rescued. You never know who you might inspire!

  • The story behind this one if frustrating — believe it or not, the building is not city-owned and it’s not for sale, it’s just been totally neglected by its owner, who is MIA. The woman who lives in the attached house next door (to the right) has tried and tried to get this one taken care of. She finally paid to have a new roof put on it a few years ago because she was concerned about it becoming unstable.

I really hope the owner appears at some point and sells the property to someone who will take care of it. The location is great (Courtney between Bay View and Liberty, right behind the church), and you’re right, I think it has a lot more square footage than it looks like from the street.

  • I understand Habitat now owns it. So, fingers crossed, it will be back to glory soon.

  • I’m super excited for the woman next door….she fixed the roof, wow.
