Backpacks and Supplies Provided for Over 1,000 Newburgh Students

Recently, the Newburgh Enlarged City School District, in conjunction with community partners, held the annual School Is Cool 2012 backpack and school supplies distribution event.

In an effort to assist students within the NECSD as they headed back to school this year, the program provided families with backpacks and school supplies to support the academic achievement of their children. Each student received a new backpack and a box containing school supplies such as glue sticks, crayons, binders, notebooks, pens, highlighters, and pencils.

When the program began in 2003, 175 backpacks were distributed to NECSD families at the first School Is Cool event. Since then the numbers have continued to steadily increase, with over 1,000 backpacks distributed this year to students. According to NECSD Coordinator of Universal Pre-K and Parent and Community Involvement Pamela Peterson, who spearheads School is Cool, the event would not have been possible without the help and assistance of local partners from within the community.
