Tickets on Sale Now for Hairspray! At Newburgh Free Academy

Newburgh Free Academy will present the musical Hairspray! on Friday, March 30, and Saturday, March 31, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 1, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. Hairspray is a sensational musical that will make you want to get up and dance! The music is by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman and a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, based on the 1988 John Waters film Hairspray. The songs include 1960s-style dance music and “downtown” rhythm and blues.

In 1962, Baltimore, Maryland, teenager Tracy Turnblad’s dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight. She then launches a campaign to integrate the show. While full of light-hearted song and dances, Hairspray is a social commentary on the injustices of parts of American society in the 1960s.

NFA’s production is directed and choreographed by Mandy Clifford, with vocal direction by Karen Sheehy, technical assistance from Rick McCurdy, and conducted by Chris Zoutis.  Hairspray is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International, Inc.

Tickets are $10.00 or $8.00 for senior citizens and children under 12.
