“The public joined historians for a walking tour through Newburgh’s East End Historic District on the theme of the “footsteps” of Andrew Jackson Downing, influential horticulturist, landscape designer and writer of antebellum America. More than a dozen homes were examined, which included designs by Downing, Calvert Vaux, Frederick Clarke Withers and many others that emulate the pattern book designs of the picturesque movement. One stop was the original location of Downing’s residence, Highland Gardens, where the public admired a large tree that Downing may have once enjoyed on his grounds.”
