Restoration work is happening to the facade of 115 Liberty Street, aka Palate Wines & Spirits. The old fake stone facade is being removed and replaced by an appropriate clapboard siding. Not only is the interior of the shop gorgeous, but they are making the outside match as well. Be sure to visit. Philippe and company are doing some commendable placemaking work here that is really making Liberty Street a quaint place to be. Before and after photos to come when the work is complete.

It all starts one building at a time…

Ms.Fairfax Newburgh 2

Over the weekend Ms. Fairfax opened just in time for the Newburgh Open Studios weekend. This new business was up and running very quickly considering they only announced their opening a few days before. The name was carefully thought out, as it replaces the former Martha. Ms. Fairfax was actually George Washington’s lover.

Some of the changes I love about Ms. Fairfax are #1, they’ll be opened later! Closing time will be 10-11pm, which gives Liberty Street a new late night dinning option. The new extended bar with attached seating is my #2 favorite change. While we were there, I noticed the bar seats were the most preferred for hanging out and chatting. They’ll be offering different beers on tap which will be rotated. Change #3 is the new to-go section. You can pick up beer, deli items, or tasty snacks for a picnic at Washington’s HQ.

Ms. Fairfax is run by the same folks from Palate Wine & Spirits.

Martha had a great run on Liberty Street over the past year, but sadly closed down. Aptly named, Ms. Fairfax will be taking Martha’s place. Ms. Fairfax was apparently George Washington’s true love. The new venue will be a restaurant/bar/pantry featuring lunch, light dinner and gourmet meats and cheeses to stay or to go. They will also be serving beer and wine. If you want to know more, check out their Facebook page or go to their soft opening this Saturday during Newburgh Open Studios!

CM new

A lot of people have been asking me what is happening at Caffe Macchiato as the new owner has been talking about moving to Florida from some now. Yesterday, on Instagram he announced that essentially the cafe has been sold and there is a new owner. It’s good to hear that the business is staying put and we will all look forward to seeing what the new owner will bring to this neighborhood staple.

Creative minds are starting to move west on Broadway. RagHaus Letterpress just moved to 223 Broadway, an old HVAC shop. If you have been following the blog, you would have seen the work of the German born RagHaus owner, Markus Hartel, previously. He designed the logo for Newburgh’s newest wine shop, Palate Wine & Spirits and he is also a Newburgh homeowner. We shared his house tour on Liberty Street last December. It’s very exciting that people are not only choosing to move to Newburgh, but also open businesses as well. The RagHaus website shares Markus’ story of how he found Newburgh why he began a letter press business. You should definitely consider reading it if you are thinking of doing something similar.

Last Friday, Eco Shrimp Garden in Newburgh had its grand opening. There was standing room only with patrons spilling out the door to attend the event. Samples of shrimp were available. Owner, Jean Claude Frajmund is excited to offer “high quality shrimp, free of chemicals, antibiotics and hormones commonly associated with traditional shrimp farming”. They are open everyday from 10:00 AM till 5:00 PM inside the old Resnick Mattress Factory, 99 South William Street.
