A public meeting regarding expansion of the Newburgh Area Transit Service will be held on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at 7:00PM at the Newburgh City Hall, 83 Broadway, Newburgh, New York. The expanded Newburgh Area Transit service will consist of improved Northside and Southside routes and a new cross-town route between the St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital facilities in Newburgh and Cornwall.
Hours of service will also be extended to approximately 7 AM to 7PM each day Monday through Saturday. Information about this expansion will be provided at the October 29th public meeting and is available at www.transitorange.info.

The City of Newburgh International Festival Committee is sponsoring a Fall Festival beginning October 2, 2014 to raise funds for the 27th annual International Festival which will take place over Labor Day Weekend, 2015.
A carnival by Shamrock Shows, will set up near Gully’s Restaurant in the area of the Ferry Parking Lot from Oct. 2- Oct. 5. The hours are: Thursday, 5 p.m.- 9 p.m.; Friday, 5-11 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday, noon- 11 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2 is Wristband Night for the rides.
The Antique & Collectible Fair will be Saturday, Oct. 4 from 11- 5p.m. at Unico Park on the Newburgh Waterfront. The Rain date for the Antique & Collectable Fair is October 5.
Vendors of good quality vintage, antique or collectible items are welcome for the low admission price of $30 per 10 x 10 space. Applications will be available on the City website, www.cityofnewburgh-ny.gov, or by calling or (845) 569-5429. Setup is from 9-11 a.m.

The City of Newburgh will be hosting a workshop for the public to learn about and provide input on architectural design guidelines that will direct the design of any new or renovated building facades along the Broadway corridor.
The public workshop will be held on August 6th, at 6:00pm in the Ritz Theater Lobby, 107 Broadway in Newburgh, NY. On street parking is available in front of the theater, and free municipal parking is also provided behind the theater on Ann Street.
This workshop is an early step in the process by the City of Newburgh to develop these architectural design guidelines, describing the planning effort underway and providing the public with the opportunity to make recommendations on how they might work. Staff members from the City, in cooperation with a consulting team, will be on hand at the workshop to help guide the discussion. All local residents and business owners are encouraged to attend and provide input on the future look of building facades along Broadway!
Joan Muriel Shapiro, 89, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, died peacefully in Florida. She was the only child of Michael and Essie Strawgate of Kingston, NY where Joan spent her childhood.
Joan married, The Silver Fox, her beloved husband Jerry Shapiro on 3/31/1946. They are survived by their loving children, Fern and Howard Ingber, Bruce and Barbara Shapiro, and Michael Shapiro. She is further survived by her adoring grandchildren, Melissa and Bradley Zimmerman, Noah and Angela Shapiro, Mathew and Michelle Ingber, great-grandchildren: Connor, Gabrielle, Emersen and Jakob Shapiro; Sophie and Jordana Ingber; Jillian Zimmerman. And her constant companions, her dogs, Sam and Fluffy.
As a young woman, Joan devoted herself to raising her family. A very high next priority was to make a difference in her community. She was a diligent fundraiser and volunteer for organizations too numerous to list. Joannie had a love affair with her cherished City of Newburgh. No one could have loved the City more than she. Joannie served so proudly as Mayor from 1980-1988. She was unstoppable in her support of police and firefighters. Joan gave every ounce of her being to improving the City and its citizens’ quality of life. Joannie squeezed out every drop of life every day. Her example will continue to be an inspiration to her family. Joannie always said she would rather wear out than rust out.
Joan loved her friends and all became extended family. Her family will be eternally grateful to Emily and Wilbert Sanchez, who cared so lovingly for her until her final moment.
There will be a graveside service for family and friends at 11 am at Congregation Agudas Israel Cemetery, 140 Erie Avenue, New Windsor, NY, followed by a gathering at The Plum Point Condominium Clubhouse approximately 1 mile away.

Thanks to Arianna Koudounas who organized the 4th community conversation that was attended by the new city manager, Michael Ciaravino. Over 70 were in attendance for this conversation. Here’s a recap of everything that happened:
Newburgh City Manager Michael Ciaravino spoke to a large group of Newburgh residents at Mount Saint Mary College on Sunday, July 20, as part of the Newburgh Community Conversation series.
Ciaravino’s topic was “Newburgh: A Report Back on Economic Development.” The event was hosted and sponsored by the Mount in the newly renovated Dominican Center, formerly Mount Saint Mary Academy. Lisa Gallina, director of admissions for Mount graduate and adult degree programs, introduced Conversation Facilitator Arianna Koudounas and Ciaravino.
Ciaravino has been Newburgh’s city manager for six weeks, since moving his family here from the Cleveland, Ohio area. He’s covered quite a lot of ground in Newburgh already, both figuratively and literally. He’s ridden along on police patrols, observed city employees at work, responded with fire fighters to a call, and “cleaned” the windows of City Hall.
Ciaravino described his early experiences in Newburgh, and spoke about his vision for revitalizing Newburgh as a post-Industrial American city. “Newburgh can be an example. How will the urban centers in post-industrial America recreate themselves in ways that are meaningful and sustainable? We can help to set the bar.”
