Kite at WHQSoaring, swirling, kites of all kinds will bob and weave as they dance in the wind at Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site during Kites Over the Hudson, on Saturday, September 20th, 2 PM to 4 PM.

Free kites will be given to the first 150 children 15 and under during this Hudson River Ramble event. Prizes will be awarded in various kite categories, and refreshments will be served to all who attend.   And there will be a Kite Hospital, staffed by members of Chapter 1782 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, to repair most kite catastrophes!

Family Memory Services has put together a brilliant video of “Newburgh then and now.” It really helps one grasp what the past hundred years have done to the city, whether it be destruction or survival. And it certainly makes you appreciate all of the buildings that have been able to stand the test of time, and the work any of us can do to make them continue to last for the next 100+ years.

Family Memory Services specializes in restoring old photos. Their Facebook Fanpage has examples of their work, many of them restored Newburgh photos! Enjoy.

I recently came across these photos taken by photographer Richard Cunningham of the deteriorating barracks of Stewart International Airport. They remind me of the abandoned Brooklyn navy yard houses. Click here to see what they looked like before. This THR article back from 2009 explained that the buildings which date back to the 1940’s were being torn down as part of a $2.5 million state grant given to New Windsor. This is what Richard had to say about the buildings:

A few of the 1950’s era military buildings at the former Stewart AFB in Newburgh, NY still remain in slow demolition. They seem to be recycling the exterior brick. Stewart was later Stewart Army Sub Post a satellite base of West point after the Air Force left in the 1960’s. A small Marine reserve air wing still is near these buildings. The Air National Guard is in a new facility on the other side of the air field which is now Stewart International Airport. These buildings where used occasionally for summer barracks for troops training west point cadets during the summer when I served at Stewart in the reserves in the 80’s. They have not been used at all since the 90’s.

Anyone else have memories of these buildings? Do you think they were so unsightly that they needed to be torn down?

Waterfront 1991 Newburgh 1a

In between the original Newburgh waterfront and the one we have today, there was a waterfront that was barren and burned out. I have been told it was a place to go if you were up to no good. This is before the restaurants and residences that line it today. We still have a long way to go connecting people to the waterfront but this picture makes you realize how far we have come. Do any of you remember it this way? What was it like?

Thanks Richie for sharing!
