Newburgh Enlarged City School District officials, along with members of various NECSD committees, came together on Thurs., September 1, 2011 for the Annual Summer Constriction Bus Tour. The tour, led by Terry Damon of Armlin, Damon & McMordie, the company hired to manage the improvement plan, visited schools within the NECSD that received renovations and improvements since the summer of 2010. The improvements are part of the overall Master Plan for the NECSD which was set in motion following bond referendums that were approved by voters in 2005 and 2007.

During the tour, participants visited GAMS Tech Magnet School, Horizons on the Hudson, Meadow Hill Global Explorations School, Newburgh Free Academy, South Middle School, Temple Hill Academy and Vails Gate High Tech Magnet School.

The scale of work varied at each building based on need including building envelope, electrical, interior, site, and mechanical improvements and upgrades.

In addition, at Temple Hill Academy and Meadow Hill, participants observed the newly reconstructed athletic fields, six lane track, and new perimeter fencing that improved the fields for physical education and modified sports.

Over at South Middle School, the auditorium was revitalized floor to ceiling with new carpeting, lighting fixtures, fresh paint, seating, and a refinished stage.

This summer, the Fostertown ETC Magnet School “Reading Garden” was revitalized with a $2,400 donation and labor of love by employees from the Newburgh and Middletown Lowes Home Improvement stores.

Store managers, Angelo Resso, of Lowes Newburgh, and Rodney Mata, of Lowes Middletown, led a crew of Lowes Heroes volunteers during a one day upgrade of the garden. The volunteers removed the old fencing and overgrown flowerbeds.

Now, when students and faculty arrive to begin the new school year they will see a revitalized “Reading Garden” complete with a picnic table, bench, and pewter fountain. In addition, a new fence and stone paved floor bed was installed, along with a new wood encased flowerbox with colorful perennials.

Recently, the Newburgh Enlarged City School District, in conjunction with community partners, held the annual School Is Cool 2012 backpack and school supplies distribution event.

In an effort to assist students within the NECSD as they headed back to school this year, the program provided families with backpacks and school supplies to support the academic achievement of their children. Each student received a new backpack and a box containing school supplies such as glue sticks, crayons, binders, notebooks, pens, highlighters, and pencils.

When the program began in 2003, 175 backpacks were distributed to NECSD families at the first School Is Cool event. Since then the numbers have continued to steadily increase, with over 1,000 backpacks distributed this year to students. According to NECSD Coordinator of Universal Pre-K and Parent and Community Involvement Pamela Peterson, who spearheads School is Cool, the event would not have been possible without the help and assistance of local partners from within the community.
