Did you ever sing that song when you were young? I did, and this Saturday you will have the chance to sing it too alongside Pete Seeger who co-wrote this song with Lee Hays. 

Habitat for Humanity of Newburgh is hosting an open-air concert featuring the legendary Pete Seeger and friends that will take place on Saturday, July 3rd from 1-4PM on the lawn at Washington’s Headquarters, overlooking the Hudson River waterfront in Newburgh, NY. All proceeds from ticket sales ($10 in advance, $15 at the door) will go to build Newburgh Habitat for Humanity’s next house in the City of Newburgh, NY. Kids under 12 free with an adult.

The Newburgh Jazz Series is back for 2010. This Thursday, July 1st, will kick of the opening night for the series. There will be performances every Wednesday and Thursday for the entire months of July and August. This is a multicultural event that will host artists from Japan to Brazilian Jazz groups. You all said you wanted more farmers markets, well check out and support the market this Saturday!

To promote the revitalization of Newburgh’s downtown area, Safe Harbors of the Hudson is pleased to announce that they will be holding their 4th Annual Ann Street Market series throughout the Summer and Fall.

These markets will bring fresh, local food and art to a community in need. They will also provide a wonderful opportunity for Newburgh residents to come together and rediscover the city’s historic downtown district.

Safe Harbors is currently seeking local farms and farmers, food purveyors, artists, artisans, musicians, local organizations and businesses, etc. to participate in the market series.

The markets will be held on the following Saturdays in 2010:

  • June 26
  • July 31
  • August 28
  • September 25
  • October 30

The markets will take place in the Ann Street municipal parking lot (located
across the street from the Ann Street Gallery at 104 Ann Street). In case of rain,
the market will be held inside the Ritz Theater Lobby at 107 Broadway.

Summer feels like it is officially here. This weekend there will be many events going on in Newburgh on the waterfront and beyond. First, the ship the Peacemaker will be docked at the waterfront offering free tours. There will also be a boat show of more than 40 boats today through Sunday. Free cooking demonstrations from the many waterfront restaurants will be available. Wildlife will be visiting Newburgh through Simmons Wildlife Program, 2pm-4pm Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.There will also be a Greek Festival at the church on 119 Fullerton Ave. June 11, 12, and 13. On the 11th it will be from 6pm-10pm, and on Saturday and Sunday, it will be from 11am-10pm. And supposedly there will be a fair at the church at 301 Ann Street.

There will also be an Art Bus going around town. It will depart from the Newburgh Landing at 12:15, 1:15, 2:15, 3:15, and 4:15.

This Sunday, 5/16/10, you could have the opportunity to take a taste of local Newburgh at Mount Saint Mary’s College. About 24 restaurants and markets will be present for you to sample all of their food. Come hungry at 12:30 – 2:30pm at the college, located on Powell Avenue. Admission is $30 and advance ticket purchase is required. You may purchase tickets through PayPal. Just click on the PayPal link on their site to begin.

As an added bonus the ticket price includes participation in a raffle of gourmet candy basket, an outdoor shrub, an indoor plant and a $50 gift card thanks to Adams Fairacre Farms. For a list of who will be attending please go to the participants page.

This weekend is a Pirate weekend in Newburgh! There are also A LOT of other things going on as well. How would you like to see Disney’s the “Black Pearl” from Pirates of the Caribbean? Well,on Thursday, April 22, the H.M.S. Bounty arrives at Newburgh for tours Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The ship was built in Nova Scotia by Disney in 1960 for “Mutiny on the Bounty” with Marlon Brando, was in the 1989 film “Treasure Island” with Charlton Heston, and appeared in several other feature-length films and dozens of TV shows and historical documentaries. It is its first voyage EVER on the Hudson River!

There will also be a Pirate Contest on Saturday, April 24, sponsored by the Newburgh Free Library at Newburgh Landing. Free registration is from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., the Pirate procession past the judges starts at 1 p.m., and award announcements are at 2 p.m. Categories are for adults 16 and over, and for youth under 16: Disney’s Jack Sparrow Look-Alike, Disney’s Elizabeth Swann Look-Alike, Funniest Pirate, and Most Original Pirate. First prize books will be awarded for all categories; second prize books for the Look-Alikes.
Then, on Sunday, April 25, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh will host the 11th Annual Walk for Housing in Historic Downing Park in Newburgh. In a single day, Habitat will raise awareness of poverty housing, raise funds for future building projects and celebrate the work of the thousands of volunteers and donors who have supported this organization. Registration is at noon and the Walk begins at 1 pm passing several Habitat homes along the way. At 2 pm is the Celebration in the Park, an afternoon of live music, entertainment, fun activities and games for the whole family. For more information click here.
Also on Sunday, April 25, is the 4th Biennial Fine Art Auction to benefit the Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands featuring local artists at Newburgh’s recently restored historic West Shore Railroad Station. The Preview Reception is at 2 p.m, and the Live Auction is at 4pm. Tickets $25 in advance; $30 at the door. Ticket price includes chances for the Chinese Auction!
