Newburgh Ferry Ridership Up

(taken from the city of Newburgh)

According to Mid Hudson News ferry ridership between Newburgh and Beacon for the MTA Metro North Railroad has increased 29% in 2008. “Metro-North President Howard Permut told MidHudsonNews.com the large jump on the Newburgh-Beacon service is a reflection of its ease and convenience over the conventional method of driving over the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge.”

This is very good news being that the revitalization of a city has A LOT to do with it’s access to public transportation. Ease to and from work in Manhattan is definitely something that has always been desirable. And, the ferry only cost $10 monthly for commuters! Whether this 29% increase are long residing residents of Newburgh who no longer want to drive across the bridge or newbies moving in to the area, this is good news.

One day off in the very distant future, you may not need a car to live in Newburgh-IF enough businesses open to fulfill your necessities-food, entertainment, worship, work, childcare, school/college, laundry, gym….the list goes on. But like I said-one day off in the far distant future….. For more positive Newburgh news check out this link.

  • $10 a month to commute to Manhattan?! I paid 3x that just to ride the city bus around Hawaii. Sounds like a sweet deal, and I’m glad to hear that your community is growing!

  • Sorry if that sounded misleading. It is $10 a month to cross the ferry to catch to MTA to Manhattan. That ticket is around $334 monthly. If you buy the webticket it is $327.

  • Or better said $10 to cross the Hudson River from Newburgh to Beacon for the MTA

  • How fun! I would love to get to work on a ferry 🙂

  • The ferry would really flourish if it met the earlier trains leaving the city. Some of us occasionally get out of work before the first evening ferry and there is a whole group of construction workers that catch the 2:50 every day from GCT and most of us would love to return home via the ferry but don’t wanna get home and have to take a taxi or hitch a ride if we are lucky enough to leave early.

  • The ferry should meet the 2:50 and 3:31 trains and during the summer the ferry should run on the weekends. Yeah, I know parking is free and there is plenty of it during the weekends, but it would be easier to take the ferry than driving over to Beacon.
