Newburgh Real Estate: 196 Montgomery St, Calvert Vaux Design

196 Montgomery St Calvert Vaux

This Picturesque Gothic style home is one of Newburgh’s most famous homes. According to Newburgh Revealed, this home was slated for demolition in the 1960’s. Thankfully that didn’t happen, and today it is a wonderfully preserved home waiting for it’s next owner. It was designed by Calvert Vaux co-designer of Central Park, and built for William E. Warren in 1854. You can see the original design in Calvert Vaux’s book, Villas and Cottages, design number 14. It is also listed on the National Register for Historic Places.

There are so many amazing aspects of this home and there is probably a story or quirky discovery waiting in every corner. The details are innumerable, like the moldings, fireplaces, even the sinks located through out the house. One might think that the bathroom needs total gutting, but it has great bones like original subway tile and wood cabinets. They definitely don’t make them like that anymore. Hopefully someone won’t come and try to modernize it so much that it takes away from the character for the home.

This home was featured on another blog that I read, Old House Dreams and, it got a lot of attention. Here’s some of my favorite comments:

I think what your group is doing in Newburgh is terrific and your site and this discussion prove that things are improving. In the last 25 years, it’s gone from being a place to totally avoid to one where interesting things are happening that people are starting to take a look at. Bravo.”

I’ve seen the progress having lived here for almost 30 years. it is indeed improving.

Lastly, the taxes are high, like really high. For those of you interested in what tax exemptions might be available for the home, check out the City of Newburgh’s Tax Assessor Page. Does anybody have any words of wisdom for people interested in these home with high taxes? How do you afford it?

  • I have been in love with this house for a long time. Like, since junior high when I did a research project on Andrew Jackson Downing and was told this was one of his designs (which I obviously found to be false) Ah, to have an extra $325K lying around. It’s absolutely worth it, though. Definitely one of the gems of the city. It’s just gorgeous.

  • Yes, it’s one of my favorite too!

  • I had the privilege to work, restore and paint the front and both sides of this beautiful home, most of all on this project I enjoyed restoring the yankee gutters back around in 2000.

  • I’ve fallen in love with this house as well but, despite looking everywhere for additional pictures, I don’t understand how the door in the bright green room can open with the sink and cabinet in front of it like that… has anyone seen this house? if so please help unboogle my mind.
