Here is a before an after of a gorgeous building on Catherine Street that has what I would call Gothic features. The designs of many row homes have been repeated quite often, but not this one. One of the great things about Newburgh is discovering these unique homes. This one though, almost didn’t survive according to Drew Kartiganer. The building was totally devastated, did not have a certificate of occupancy and probably would’ve been torn down by now. Look at the photos below and you can see see the sky right through the roof from the second floor! There was snow inside the building as well as vines. It was a complete shell. Fortunately Drew gave us a lot of nitty gritty before and after photos, enjoy!

It’s been about 11 years since the house was restored. Drew says it could probably use a little paint, but it is a solid building. He was also the architect, developer and contractor. A total of $2.2 million dollars was invested on 5 abandoned and devastated shells. We hope to show you some other photos of the other projects that were done.  Take your pick if you want to save your own abandoned Newburgh home. There’s about 700 more of these.

This project is a great reminder of the potential of Newburgh abandoned buildings that people say should be torn down. The character of these homes can never be replaced or duplicated. Thanks Drew Kartiganer for sharing the photos!

Here is a close up of the side porch. The same beautiful window motif carries over here, and the star bolts also give the building a lot of character.

Here is a lovely house at the north end of the City of Newburgh. It’s a 1926 Colonial home that was once overwrought with weeds and a wild lawn. The owners, Jodie and Jeff, are fixing up their home slowly, but wanted to share the work they have done on the exterior. Since purchasing the home they have added a new roof, windows, doors and gutters. They have also power washed the siding.

There was a stone walkway that was hidden from the overgrown grass. Today the home looks lovely. See below.

In the future they plan to share the work they are doing on the interior. We can’t wait to see!

This is one of my favorite houses on Liberty Street. It looks like a gingerbread house doesn’t it? It had been vacant for quite some time, and finally a young family from Brooklyn bought it and fixed it up. Here’s one more look at what it looked like before:

The house on the left had missing windows, graffiti and a ton of garbage all around. Today this home sets an example of what the entire block has the potential to look like:

And it doesn’t stop there. Here are a few more photos of what the house used to look like before and after.

I really love these before and after photo examples. They show you that with effort, rescuing Newburgh homes is possible one by one. Homeowner occupancy is essential to restore community pride and maintenance of properties. The home next door would be an excellent choice if you would like to rescue your own Newburgh home.

This Before and After post is particularly exciting. This home is the project of Robert Fontaine, actor, writer and director whom we spoke to a few months back about his plans for Newburgh. Most of the exterior work has been completed, although it is still a work in progress. He is doing the majority of the work himself and has many ideas up his sleeve for the City of Newburgh. Stay tuned!

The transformation of this quaint carriage house is just a sample of the lovely architecture Newburgh holds, ripe for restoration. Whether you want a studio, brownstone, mansion or loft, Newburgh has it all. If you have your own before and after project of a property in the City of Newburgh that you would like to share, email me.

The Bluff in the Height neighborhood in the City of Newburgh has some of the most gorgeous uninterrupted views of the Hudson River. Slowly but surely, many homes are being fixed up and bought. This home his special because it is designed by Frank E. Estabrook. Unfortunately the opposite side of the building was redesigned with stone, completely altering the porch design.

The visible changes are a paint job of the front stairs, fixing the lattice work under the porch, painting the trim, front door and other woodwork. Maybe one day we can see the left side restored as well. For more history on the home click here.
