This before and after comes from Habitat for Humanity. It was a home mostly built by women, and was dedicated on Mother’s Day, May 13th. Everything on the inside is brand new. You can see tons of more photos of the progress on Habitats Facebook page here and here. YNN was there to capture the moment, and you can see a short video of the dedication.

Habitat is bringing Newburgh back one house at a time. The have already restored and built more than 50 houses, and plan to do another 50 in the next five years to come!

If you live in the Heights Neighborhood, you surely are familiar with this building at 69 Bay View Terrace. It used to be a dilapidated graffiti magnet, and today it is an all girls private catholic academy. Newburgh Restoration posted about it in Dec. 2010, and already there were huge improvements made.

Minuta Architecture drew up the plans for the site. Some of the upgrades to the structure that were mentioned were: raising the entire building off the original foundation, energy efficiency by upgrading the windows and insulation, adding to the structure, and well as obvious major cosmetic repairs. What can be seen today is a beautiful restoration and reuse of a grand Newburgh home.

This house on Henry Street has come a long way. It was once falling apart and exposed to the elements. Now, it’s the poster child example of what private citizens can accomplish with the run-down buildings of Newburgh. Minuta Architecture did the work of planning the new facade. Now it looks gorgeous and Henry Street is looking a little brighter. Imagine if a couple of houses on each block could undergo such a transformation?

It seems like slowly the house run down homes around the bluff are getting fixed up one by one. Like this home that was bought, fixed up and then sold by neighbors on the bluff.

See 11 Henry during construction.

And here’s a close up of the details, just because it looks that GOOD!

The architectural details of this home have made this renovation a favorite. It is so pleasing to see that the details were salvaged! Even though a new porch was needed, the entire cornice and shingles were saved, keeping the historical character of Newburgh intact. Habitat for Humanity did a wonderful job. Click here to see the entire photo album of work done on this home. It was one of three homes restored on Benkard.

Now, just imagine if more homes were restored like this in Newburgh! The city has a lot of homes that need restoring.

The transformation at 72 Benkard is really a site to be seen. It was looked horrible with peeling paint, absent porch, crumbling front stairs, broken windows, and that’s just the exterior! The inside was pretty much a shell as well. Habitat for Humanity did an excellent job rehabbing this home which is one of three homes that were restored on Benkard. You can see the entire photo documentary of the work done on Habitat for Humanity’s Fan Page.

This home has great views of Mt. Beacon. The new family must be very excited! You can see more details on this news clip with video.

This home at 65 Courtney is a special renovation by Habitat for Humanity because it is the 50th completed house in Newburgh. It was dedicated to the Knight Family on November 20, 2011 in honor of Diedre Glenn, Habitats first executive director. To date over 300 children and adults have been accepted in to Habitat Newburgh’s homebuyer program and the 50 completed houses have returned nearly $9 million to the City of Newburgh’s assessed property values.

Habitat has 8 sites under construction, and another 30 sites secured for the future. The East Parmenter Neighborhood when complete will be home to nearly 100 residents. A stark difference from it’s gloomy past. This home at 65 Courtney was a burned out mess with collapsing walls and ceilings. To fully appreciate the wonderful job Habitat has done, check out their fan page for more photos.
