Lewis Howard Latimer

Saturday, February 5, 2011 10:00 am-5:00 pm, 401 Washington St , Newburgh, NY

Come out and learn about Black History during Black History Month at the Black Inventors Showcase Exhibit that will display more than 100 items in a collection authenticated by actual inventions, replicas, representative models, patent drawings, photographs, newspaper articles and biographies. The exhibit is a wonderful learning experience for children and adults.

“120 years ago, Lewis Howard Latimer, an African-American Civil War veteran whose parents had escaped from slavery, worked on a team that assisted Thomas Edison in developing the electric light bulb. Edison struggled with filaments that burned out after barely more than a day’s use. Latimer solved that problem by developing a carbon filament-and we’ve lived in a brighter world ever since.”

The Newburgh Panorama Mural is a representation of the pride of Newburgh in it’s glory days. One look at this painting and you can see why. The mural was painted by Albert Nemethy in 1950 and was commissioned by Abram and Eva Levinson, owners of the former Hotel Newburgh. They had it commissioned especially for the Green Room to show case Newburgh architecture. The mural is still in the Green Room if you would like to view it for yourself.

With the hotel going in a steep decline in the 1970’s, it was saved by the Newburgh Historical Society and moved to a bank. In 1996 it was moved to Stewart Airport where it stayed until 2006 when the Green Room was restored by Safe Harbors of the Hudson (the organization that presides over the Green Room and Ritz Theater) and had a grand opening at their gala. I love looking at this painting as it shows parts of a Newburgh that many of us never got to see.

There are over 20 individual Newburgh scenes painted in this mural. It is a rather large painting, so I took pictures of each individual scene. Some of the places are long gone now and some still exist. If you remember any of the vanished places, feel free to comment on what we see in the scene. Thank you Safe Harbors for letting me come in and share the mural!

“The Founding Fathers”
Samuel Adams, James Madison, Ben Franklin, George Washington,
Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, John Adams

Thursday, December 2, 2010 – Thursday, March 31, 2011

The Karpeles Museum brings its tenth year of service to the Newburgh community to an end with a celebration of many aspects of American history through an art show depicting many of the nation’s most important personages. The distinguished artist Dona McPhillips Couch spent many years researching and creating a spectacular series of large group portraits, measuring two feet high and five feet long, presenting a panorama of American personages.

The ten majestic group portraits cover many aspects of American history, from the beginnings of the country through the twentieth century. The painting devoted to “Founding Fathers” portrays such early heroes as Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin. The Civil War is covered in two paintings, one devoted to the Union side (Abraham Lincoln, flanked by generals Sheridan, Sherman, Grant, and others) and the Confederacy (Jefferson Davis with generals Forrest, Stonewall Jackson, and Robert E. Lee). Great pioneers of the 19th century are depicted, as well as Texan heroes James Bowie, Sam Houston, and Davy Crockett.

“Indian Heroes”
Sitting Bull (Sioux), Captain Jack (Modoc), Two Moon (Cheyenne)
Red Cloud (Sioux), Geronimo (Apache), Quanah Parker (Commanche), Crazy Horse (Sioux)

Two paintings of Native Americans show not only the well-known Geronimo, Sitting Bull, and Crazy Horse but also many other representatives of the Sioux, Cheyenne, Apache, and Comanche nations. Women receive equal attention with portraits of feminists Margaret Sanger, First Lady Eleanor  Roosevelt, and activist educator Mary McLeod Bethune, among others, and African Americans share a painting that includes such important figures as Malcolm X, Ralph Bunche, W.E.B. DuBois, Frederick  Douglass, and Martin Luther King, Jr. All are vividly portrayed in dramatic and imaginative settings illustrative of their and lives and times.

The Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum is located at 94 Broadway, across from City Hall, in the City of Newburgh. The Karpeles Museums are a national chain with nine in the U.S., specializing in the preservation and display of original, historically significant documents and manuscripts. Museum Hours: Thu.-Sat., 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, 12 to 4 p.m. Admission is always free.

Back in June we mentioned a taco truck on Broadway. Someone mentioned Los Portales, so we stopped by to check them out too. They are located at 295-299 Broadway.

One of the first things I noticed was that the restaurant was packed with Mexican families. So my friend and I knew that the food was going to be good! The tacos were super yummy and super CHEAP! I didn’t jot down the prices, but it was something like 3 flautas for $1.25, thick burritos for around $5.00 and 2 tacos for $2 something. We really stuffed ourselves that night!

I even ordered some take out for later so that I could share some with my husband. Needless to say, these tacos were inhaled!

This was just some sinage that is pretty funny, if you understand Spanish. It basically says, “Don’t get mad if I charge you, because I don’t accept tabs.” I know, it sounds better in Spanish!

There is a large Mexican presence in Newburgh which accounts for the really authentic food at Los Portales. The owners of the restaurant were very sweet and we had an awesome time hanging out with all of the Mexican families! Click here for a look at more Newburgh Restaurants.
