Exhibition Dates: September 1, 2010 – December 31, 2010

In the history of the United States, no issue has been more contentious, politically, economically, or morally, than that of slavery, the outright ownership of human beings. It was a controversial institution in the nation from the 1770s to the 1860s and one of the principal issues leading to the American Civil War. The Karpeles Museum will display original documents, illustrations, and memorabilia relating to the slave trade, the efforts at its suppression, and its historical consequences, from before the American Revolution to modern times.

“Still Life with Vessels” by Christopher Peters

This Saturday at 6pm will be the opening of a new exhibit at the Ann Street Gallery called, “Momento Mori: Contemporary Vanitas.” Vanitas means “vanities of life,” and usually feature an elaborate arrangement of objects rich in commonly understood symbolism. This intriguing style of still life often contains pictorial messages with moral undertones, to remind the viewer of the transience of life, the futility of pursuing earthly pleasures, the certainty of death.

The six artists in the Memento Mori exhibit express such themes through varied and diverse works. Each artist uses their own unique and contemporary visual language to speak directly to the viewer of the inherently transitory nature of life, and ones own mortality.

The above painting struck me the most. The exhibit runs through Saturday, October 30. For more information, contact Virginia Walsh at (845) 562-6940 ext. 119 or vwalsh@safe-harbors.org

There were rumors that the International Festival wasn’t going to happen this year due to the city’s economic condition. Although the rumors were false, one thing that has changed is the location. Because of road construction work the festival has to be moved from the waterfront to the newly acquired armory on S. William Street. It will take place September 4, 5, and 6th.

There will be a variety of vendors, international and local cuisine, carnival rides and games, and music by local bands. The festival will start off Friday at 5pm and Saturday and Sunday it will be from 12-11pm. The festivities will go on rain or shine! Check out this link for last years photos. I have to say, last year it was quite nice. It was great seeing all different kinds of families out enjoying the day.

This Saturday a little bit of Italy will be visiting Newburgh in the form of a fashion writer Emma Travet at Caffe Macchiato. There is going to be a book signing and a video all about Emma and Italy. From what I can gather from translating various parts of this books reviews, this book is about a journalists dream to write for Vanity Fair. It talks about vintage finds, fashion in Milan, and is a book about good spirits and optimism. Surely a fun time awaits those who will attend this book signing, just as the ladies in the photos below did in Italy. Check out that signora’s pink stockings and green shoes! Caffe Macchiato will also be exhibiting photographer, Massimo Milanese’s work. We are loving the cultural events in Newburgh!
