Kathak by Shivani Dave and Group
The North Indian Classical dance, Kathak, originated as the art of stoyrtelling. The word Kathak is derived from “katha” meaning story; hence, “Kathakas” refers to stories which are depicted through dance. Kathak is now regarded as a sophisticated art form which requires the performer’s virtuousity to encompass three main elements: Bhava-mood, Raag-melody, and Taal-rhythm. Instrumental Segment will be by Mrs. Varada Iruvanti. Mrs. Iruvanti will play the ancient Indian string instrument, Veera. It will be a mix of classical and light style.

What
: A lecture/demonstration and live performance by Quimbombó
For those of you who love Latin cultural events, this will be a nice treat.

Quimbombó is a groove-oriented band with a musical base in the Cuban son (the contagious dance music championed by Buena Vista Social Club that is the main ingredient in salsa); Quimbombó (pronounced keem-bohm-BO) is the title of a classic Cuban son from the 1950’s. The group has performed at many venues including Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night’s Swing, SOB’s, and The River to River Festival. They have recorded two CDs, Quimbombo, released in 2004, and Conga Electrica, released in 2008. Refreshments will be served.
I have been to all of those venues, and am sure this will be a very fun event since who can listen to this music and not dance? Son is very similar to Salsa. To see what you can expect, check out a little clip of the band:

The Ann Street Gallery welcomes electronic music artists Suzanne Thorpe and Bonnie Jones to conduct a workshop and concert, Electronic Music: Powered by Girls, on Saturday March 13 from 1:00-5:00 PM, and a public concert at 8:00 PM. The workshop is free to the public, and concert admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students.

The workshop will provide young girls aged 13-18 hands-on experience with both digital and analog technologies, fostering familiarity and confidence in areas of art, science and technology. Girls will be able to make their own music gathering, editing, and processing sounds.

The evening concert will feature solo electronic music compositions by the artists as well as an improvised collaborative duet performance. Thorpe will present a single performance of Nautical Twilight, a multichannel solo work for flute, electronics, laptop and hemispherical speakers. Nautical Twilight is a piece about the absence of illumination, when objects are discernible, but details indistinguishable. Jones will present an improvised performance based on a text/poetry score. The piece will combine sound and poetry written by Jones, exploring the area where music becomes communicative and text becomes aural.
