On 8 Liberty (small red building in front of Liberty St. School), a new Jamaican restaurant has officially opened. The inside looked really nice and clean. There was no food for us to try when we were there because they weren’t officially opened yet, but stop by and leave a comment here if you like what you try. There were rumors that the International Festival wasn’t going to happen this year due to the city’s economic condition. Although the rumors were false, one thing that has changed is the location. Because of road construction work the festival has to be moved from the waterfront to the newly acquired armory on S. William Street. It will take place September 4, 5, and 6th.
There will be a variety of vendors, international and local cuisine, carnival rides and games, and music by local bands. The festival will start off Friday at 5pm and Saturday and Sunday it will be from 12-11pm. The festivities will go on rain or shine! Check out this link for last years photos. I have to say, last year it was quite nice. It was great seeing all different kinds of families out enjoying the day.
It is wonderful to see that urban farms are slowly starting to dot the Newburgh landscape of empty lots. This Saturday, there will be a press conference announcing the newest urban garden project. It will be at 10am, at the lot on 59 Chambers Street. The name of the garden will be La Vida Garden. The Urban Farmers League plans to use the lot as a pilot project which will hopefully expand and create other gardens in vacant lots in Newburgh.

I know I am very late on this because this happened over six months ago, but this is a cool find that I came across after doing some reading on Genie’s Journal about the Travel Channel visiting Newburgh while in the Hudson Valley to sample some of Broadway’s finest tacos. I didn’t get a chance to see the episode, so I have no idea what they are talking about in this photo, but Yay! for Newburgh for being on the Travel Channel and being visited by Anthony Bourdain!
The Ixtapa Taco Truck is at 423 Broadway, Newburgh, in front of Family Dollar. They received a nice little review last week on Chowhound saying, “I ordered 3 tacos ($1.50 each) of the al pastor variety. Double corn tortillas, lots of spicy, tender pork, lettuce, hot sauce and radish slices and lime wedges. Tasty, tasty, tasty. Best time to catch the truck there is weekend afternoons.” When we showed up on Saturday afternoon, there was a line already outside. Apparently they are so good even the locals love them! Last year we mentioned to you a new cafe opening on 81 Liberty Street. Well, the Fairweather Cafe is back and open for business for the Summer of 2010. This weekend, May 29 and 30 the cafe will be open from noon to 6pm and noon to 4pm respectively. Come out and enjoy their lovely outdoor bistro dining area which is the backyard garden of the Terrace Lounge. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian platters are available. They also might have some surprises up their sleeves for some future events.

This Sunday, 5/16/10, you could have the opportunity to take a taste of local Newburgh at Mount Saint Mary’s College. About 24 restaurants and markets will be present for you to sample all of their food. Come hungry at 12:30 – 2:30pm at the college, located on Powell Avenue. Admission is $30 and advance ticket purchase is required. You may purchase tickets through PayPal. Just click on the PayPal link on their site to begin.
