Members of the community of the change to grown their own food and even be a bee keeper. Plots for the community garden will be in the Armory or in Downing Park. The urban farming bug is really catching on in Newburgh. The Urban Farmers League should be opening up their garden on Chambers Street again this year. See flyer for more information.

This Saturday February 12th will be the taste opening of the “Straight A Cafe” at Simple Gifts and Goodies by Anaya. Monday, February 14th will be the Grand Opening. Soul Food with a twist will be on the menu. Simple Gifts and Goodies is a very quaint shop, and if you have never visited take a look at the makeover the shop underwent. They are located at 19 Liberty Street in Newburgh.

A few weeks back Billy Joe’s Ribworks opened up in the former 26 Front Street Space. I headed over there during the night to take a really quick peek inside. They have done up the entrance really well, and inside the place is massive and it was packed! Take a looksy for yourself.

Less than stellar restaurant/bar 26 Front Street was sold and will now be Billy Joe’s Ribworks. It’s scheduled to open January 10, 2011 and promises “the best in BBQ and live entertainment on the Newburgh Waterfront.” The restaurant will seat 250 guests and during summer months seat 500. The menu is focused on smokehoused meats, but will also give the option for non-smoked meats. “Great lengths” have been taken to keep this restaurant reasonably priced for the location. Ribworks is being offered as a family location for casual fun.
The website is impressive and there are already some events lined up for January. Live music will be played every Friday and Saturday night starting at 10pm in support of the local music community. Back in June we mentioned a taco truck on Broadway. Someone mentioned Los Portales, so we stopped by to check them out too. They are located at 295-299 Broadway.
One of the first things I noticed was that the restaurant was packed with Mexican families. So my friend and I knew that the food was going to be good! The tacos were super yummy and super CHEAP! I didn’t jot down the prices, but it was something like 3 flautas for $1.25, thick burritos for around $5.00 and 2 tacos for $2 something. We really stuffed ourselves that night!
I even ordered some take out for later so that I could share some with my husband. Needless to say, these tacos were inhaled!
This was just some sinage that is pretty funny, if you understand Spanish. It basically says, “Don’t get mad if I charge you, because I don’t accept tabs.” I know, it sounds better in Spanish!
There is a large Mexican presence in Newburgh which accounts for the really authentic food at Los Portales. The owners of the restaurant were very sweet and we had an awesome time hanging out with all of the Mexican families! Click here for a look at more Newburgh Restaurants.
