Garden Before

Bob’s renovation adventures continues! Now that it’s Spring, he is paying attention to his backyard. It’s a a much needed distraction after his pipes burst over the winter!

The first shot was taken there during the inspection I had done in February of 2012.  It was only touched in the ensuing year to dump more things there.  You will note the broken fish tank.  The second picture is looking across the yard from about that vantage point just last night.  You’ll see the blue stone path leading to the rear which, was completely covered with debris and not visible.  This is only the start of the growing season.  After the harsh winter, I’m glad so many of the things I put in (bought at Adams Fairacre Farms when they discount them in the late Fall) have sprouted.  One of my knockout roses didn’t make it and some other things, but I have a lot of perennials planted.  It’s an improvement to the ‘hood, or at least I think so, all park of my ongoing adventures of restoring a house on Chambers Street.

It’s been a tough year for Bob battling with some personal issues. We are so glad to see that he is moving full steam ahead on his row house Chambers Street!

Although it might seem like cleaning up the debris at 1 Edward has happened in a matter of weeks, what you see above took months to complete. Finally the debris has been cleared and the roof as well as the second floor ceiling can begin to rebuilt. Already we can see new floor joists in place.

To get to this point all of the sheet rock partitions also had to be removed. Below is what the property looked like a few months prior. Thanks to the home owners for keeping us updated on their extreme home makeover! The journey:

1 Edward Snow

Things at 1 Edward started to move along quite slowly after the owners had decided they wanted to buy it last fall. Enough was removed by the first snow fall we had in December 2013 when these photos were taken. The debris from the huge warehouse roof that collapsed had to be removed by hand. If you remember what it looked like before, it was a monumental task. Now we can see the full damage of the north wall, it’s piratically gone! This is more than your average home renovation, this is an Extreme Makeover! We can’t wait to see how this all ends!

Anna Dorfman, resident and author of one of Newburgh’s most influential blogs shares the journeys of her home buying experience. Not only is it insightful for those of you looking to buy a home, it is an emotional reflection of what is involved in purchasing a home in a city that has many challenges like Newburgh. Surely buy the end of reading her article you’ll be “yay-ing” with her as she and her husband found “THE ONE”, Door Sixteen. Thanks Anna.

Remember the warehouse at 1 Edward that we shared? Many were upset that the listing did not include details about the decimated roof. We plain forgot that it collapsed last winter as well. Now we have amazing news. Last week a family from Brooklyn closed on the property! Even more amazing, the family shared with me that they bought and this property only because they found it on Newburgh Restoration!! In her own words:

I initially found the property through Zillow.com and found interior photo from your website. In fact, the white blank box that attracted me is an old photo. The current property condition is “a shell”.  No roof…collapsed this past winter due to snow. 1/3 of the 3 floor is gone…due to the roof collapse. And one side of the wall (not the one facing Renwick St) is partially gone too. Me and my husband were rather shocked & forgot to take a picture.

However, the story has a happy ending. We are pursuing the property, thanks to your “white open interior” photo. Otherwise, we would not make a trip to Newburgh yesterday morning. Thank you very much !!!

I am truly humbled and ecstatic that the website is having the reach I always hoped it would. They are a fashion industry professional and an artist. They plan to use the warehouse as living and work space. Through my conversations with the family this is perhaps my favorite quote of them all:

The neighbor artists called us ” brave”. Coming from Brooklyn, this was the sight we saw some 20 years ago in Brooklyn. Nothing to be scared of.

Here is what you will be able to see in the photos below:

  • The basement with black mold
  • The roof that collapsed
  • The collapse of the 3rd floor into the 2nd
  • Bricks that need repointing
  • A dumbwaiter elevator the family intends to keep
  • Old insulation fiber balls and damaged wood pieces all over floor

It is going to be a monumental task but the family is being positive keeping in mind the amazing Hudson River view they will have in the end. Enjoy the photos and we hope they will share the progress of the warehouse in our Home Renovations Adventures feature.

Bob is sharing his last home renovations adventure for 2013. This one has to deal with the Gothic details of his home like this gorgeous iron fence that he thinks is original to the home. Doesn’t it look amazing next to the old slate sidewalk?

Here are Bob’s words regarding his hunt for Gothic details:

“When I contemplated the lackluster mid-20th Century fixtures flanking my front door, one without its shade, I thought it would be nice to find something that looked like it could have been from the 1890’s, something with a Gothic arch would be ideal to tie in with the fence on the other half of the building.  The hunt began.”

Here’s what I came up with. They’ll eventually be on a timer and, since there’s a street light that keeps my porch well lit, I put in the bulbs that look like flames.  Just inside, there’s another Gothic reference, but this is to the classic Gothic horror story, “Dracula.”  The Count is discussing his recent lease of a derelict property in England with his English solicitor, who warns him that Carfax Abbey is an ancient building and not in good repair.  The Count’s reply resonated with me and my feelings for my old house. The frame is an antique.  Maybe the sentiments expressed will resonate with other old house lovers.

Thanks for sharing Bob, and thanks for paying attention to the exterior of your home. It makes a nicer block for everyone!
