139 William Street Newburgh NY

Here is a group of buildings that is very sad. I am sure at one time they were beautiful with children playing ball out front and flower boxes and planters dotting the sidewalk. This building at 139 sits boarded up today, covered with paint and graffiti. Although this may seem like your run of the mill building, I love have the cornices make them unique. All of the buildings in this group have the same one. How great would they all look restored and painted in different colors?!

William Street is a real urban street with buildings and storefronts that look just like any other city. It has fallen on very hard times. I hope one day it can flourish as a business district as it once was.

The building is owned by Torina Inc, or Staten Island. I couldn’t find any Torina Inc in Staten Island, but there is one in Brooklyn that is a real estate office, and it is being listed as a closed business. They bought the property for $1 back in 2009.

There are over 700 abandoned or vacant properties in the City of Newburgh. Habitation of these properties is vital to the revitalization of the city.

Here is a rescue me that is actually for sale. The building to the left might be a little scary, but this location is only a few yards down from Habitat for Humanity’s headquarters and the East Parmenter Neighborhood. In time I bet the house to the left will be torn down and something else will be built in it’s place.

Ideally, it would be great for a homeowner to move into this property. There are over 700 abandoned or vacant buildings in the City of Newburgh. Habitation of these buildings, especially by homeowners is essential to the revitalization of the city. For inspiration for what this home could look like, click here.

110-112 Broadway Newburgh NY

Here is a huge property that has been sitting vacant for quite some time on the corner of Broadway and Chambers Street. There exists the potential for this building to be so many things. If you have a business that you are looking to relocate, do consider this one. There is storefront space and massive space above and in the rear that could be anything from offices to manufacturing space.

The advantages of this location is that it is opposite of the street from the Ritz Theater which is an anchor to the revitalization of Broadway. Also, Chambers Street has seen a lot of improvements over the past year. The land bank will be making it’s home there along with other artistic endeavors that currently take place on that block. Rehabilitation of this building would bring revitalization efforts around the corner. Please, somebody rescue me!

This house is located just a few feet away from Downing Park and around the corner from the hospital. It’s quite nice that the house raises up from the street and there even looks to be a driveway on the right side of the property.

One of Newburgh’s oldest buildings with some of the richest early American history is in danger of destruction according to the New York History Blog. But there is still time left. Weigand’s Tavern is located at 326 Liberty Street, at the Northwest corner of the Old Town Cemetery.  According to the blog, “it is a relic of the American Revolution where many Revolutionary notables spent time.”

Efforts in the past to revitalize the building have come and gone various times throughout the past decades. Although the structure is in horrible shape and probably has very little to no historical details inside, this building is vital to Newburgh’s history linking it to the Palatine’s and the Revolutionary War.

The blog mentions that the property is in private hands. However, Orange County records show that in 2012 the property was sold back to the City of Newburgh for $15. If you love old buildings with rich stories and want to save one of Newburgh’s treasures before it is gone forever, this is an excellent candidate.

82 Ann St Newburgh NY

Ann Street is home to many modest houses. They are all in various stages of debilitation or rehabilitation. This house, #82 has been secured with a lock and is in dire need or rehabilitation. It is one of my favorite homes on this small section of Ann Street in between Grand and Liberty Street. One can only guess what work is needed in the interior, but the exterior has nice woodwork that looks like it has been painted about 20 times. And if you look closely, it looks like there is original clapboard underneath that puke-pink/grey painted siding.

There are already three homes across the street that have had the siding redone. According to records, this home sold for $9,000 last year! However, today it sits empty. This house is in an ideal central location in Newburgh. Saving this home should be a no brainer. There are over 700 abandoned or vacant homes in Newburgh. Habitation of these homes is vital to Newburgh’s future.
