56 Chambers St Newburgh NY

56 Chambers Street has the potential to be a beautiful building. Until then, it sits vacant and crumbling. There apparently used to be two storefront spaces, one on the left and one on the right. It would be amazing if someone could buy this building and restore the commercial space so that people could walk to stores in Newburgh like the city was designed for.

If you need some inspiration for what this place could look like, check out this blog that shows before and after photos of a similar space.

The home is owned by someone who lives in Newburgh and bought the home for $1 according to Orange County Property records. There are approximately 700 abandoned and vacant buildings in the City of Newburgh. Inhabiting these buildings is vital to the revitalization of the city.

195 First St Newburgh NY

Here is a gorgeous massive home that is abandoned at the corner of First Street and South Miller. The front entrance is actually on South Miller, but for some strange reason the address looks like it is registered on First Street. Finally a home that has a phone # outside for those of you interested in purchasing one of these homes. The number looks to be: 845-728-3303.

From the photo it looks like there used to be a porch surrounding the entrance. The left side addition could be a house just in itself. The house in the rear was for sale last year and also has gorgeous details. It was supposedly bought but remains in the same condition. And, there is a nice cobblestone driveway in the rear of the house.

A trip to the library or historical society would probably reveal original photos of this home as well as some information about the original owners. RESCUE ME! For inspiration, check out this amazing transformation of another house in despair.

28 Spring St Newburgh NY

On passing this home one afternoon we noticed that the front door was bolted with a lock from the outside. Two extensions have been built over the years as is noticeable in the rear. This home is on a section of Spring Street where there are many adorable homes. There aren’t that many houses on this block, and so each home that is rehabbed has a huge impact to the quality of the block. The best incentive to restore this home: the East Parmenter Neighborhood is just around the corner.

This home looks like it might have been brick or wood before the stucco was applied. If you need some inspiration for restoring the exterior of houses, check out this beautiful makeover on This Old House.

55 Chambers St Newburgh

This house at 55 Chambers Street has the potential to be such a charming home! Unfortunately it is far from it. This neglected property would be a huge addition to the block if purchased and fixed up along with the two homes to the left: 51 and 53 Chambers. The City of Newburgh owns it now. Here is dated listing for the place.

Newburgh is New York State’s second largest historic district after NYC. Newburgh literally has hundreds of dilapidated and abandoned buildings just begging for someone to come scoop them up and restore them. I’ll continue to post my own photos, but if you have a particular building you would like to see saved, email me the photo of any building you appreciate that you would like to see rescued!

52 Chambers St Newburgh

Here is a quirky row house at 52 Chambers Street. This home has seen better days, and if not rescued will probably collapse soon. There are a great number of artistic things happening on this block including the Queen of the Hudson Music Series, urban garden,  Habitat for Humanity Housing Blitz and the new offices for the Newburgh Land Bank. There are a few gorgeous buildings on this block, but then there are some very distraught ones. If this building falls down, the charm can never be replaced. Check out this beautiful Brooklyn blog that is all about saving wooden houses.

The home was sold for $60,000 in 2004. It is owned by a family that lives in Haverstraw. Today it sits vacant and abandoned.
