Community Gardens at the Dutch Reformed Church

Yesterday was the commencement of the Community Gardens at the Dutch Reformed Church, Harvesting History. The goal of “Harvesting History” is to raise awareness of the group’s preservation activities at the historic landmark while setting aside a portion of its grounds for a series of community gardens that will yield organic, locally-grown vegetables to help sustain and nourish the City of Newburgh’s poor and hungry.

See below for more pictures of the event. More of my photos can also be seen at DesolatePlaces.com

On Saturday, April 30 crowds gathered at La Vida Garden on Chambers St. while mentors worked closely with the city’s youth as they created graffiti murals for the YOUTH | ART project with the theme “Understanding Newburgh.”

YOUTH | ART was one of several kick-off events going on that also included a volunteer fair, the launch of the Armory’s new community garden, and Cupcake-a-Palooza at the Ritz Theater. For more information contact Eileen MacAvery Kane, emacavery@gmail.com

Members of the community of the change to grown their own food and even be a bee keeper. Plots for the community garden will be in the Armory or in Downing Park. The urban farming bug is really catching on in Newburgh. The Urban Farmers League should be opening up their garden on Chambers Street again this year. See flyer for more information.

The Urban Farmers League had their opening on July 24th, and it was a success. More than 100 people were present. Check out a video on YNN News regarding the opening. The Urban Gardeners plan to sell and use their produce.

On another note, the Urban Garden will serve as an arts venue. Movie night will be every Sunday from 7-9pm. Open mic night will be every first and third Tuesday of the month from 7-9pm. And they will hold art classes, workshops, and other events. This plot of land has seen a huge transformation. Check out their website or facebook page for more updates.

It is wonderful to see that urban farms are slowly starting to dot the Newburgh landscape of empty lots. This Saturday, there will be a press conference announcing the newest urban garden project. It will be at 10am, at the lot on 59 Chambers Street. The name of the garden will be La Vida Garden. The Urban Farmers League plans to use the lot as a pilot project which will hopefully expand and create other gardens in vacant lots in Newburgh.

This project is being run by the same folks that started the Ashe Urban Garden. They are mentioned in today’s Times Herald Record. You can read more about this project here. Or contact Kim Bersin at 845-527-7826. For more positive Newburgh news check out this link.

What: 5 needy families needed for urban garden project
When: May 8, 2010, 10am-12pm – orientation
Where: YMCA 377 Broadway; Garden will be at Downing Park
Why: Every family has the right to fresh, organic, economic foodLast year we highlighted the Ashe Urban Garden Project. That project was for high school students. But how would you and your entire family like to participate in an urban garden project in Newburgh at no cost to you? Well this Saturday, May 8th, at 10 am at the YMCA, there will be a family orientation introducing the project. They will also provide background information on gardening. Five families are needed whose food budget would be greatly effected by this free produce. On May 22nd, at 10:00 am, the families will meet at Downing Park to build the garden plots and plant the initial seeds/seedlings.

Each family will be assigned two 4 ft by 8 ft plots and be responsible for maintaining them over the summer. They will be asked to sign a contract that lays out their rights and responsibilities. There is no monetary charge for the families, just the time and energy to prepare and maintain the plots. There will even be Spanish interpreters available. All of the materials will be provided through donations. Participating families will receive detailed training so that they know how to plant, tend, and harvest the vegetables. There is also the possibility of bringing a chef to one of the sessions to show people ways they can prepare the fresh vegetables for eating. Another option to families might be to sell their produce at the Farmer’s market held at Downing park each Saturday during the summer.

Please spread the word about this project. There are many needy families in Newburgh who could benefit from fresh produce. And, this is a great example of people coming together to help out others in the community. This is a great way for families to spend time together and reap the benefits of what they are sewing. Summer vacation can be a boring time for many children, but with an urban garden, children can focus their attention on something positive and parents can spend quality time with their kids.
