Before and After:24 Henry

(Pictures taken from Habitat for Humanity

Take a look at 24 Henry. The before shot looks like the house from Sony Pictures movie “Monster House” that terrorizes the neighborhoods little children. Thehouse after looks fresh and lighter. This project was Habitat for Humanity’s for Women’s Build Project. It seems that the entire project was done by women. Since this project many women have increased their role in construction restoration projects. Interested in volunteering? Click here.

  • Wow, I wish I lived in a town with so much history. I love the architecture there!

  • I love the before picture better.
Cedar shake shingles are lovely if they were cleaned and maintained. Too bad!
But I understand why Habitat for Humanity would go for a less historic look and rip out the cedar shingles and use vinyl siding.

Too bad the original integrity of an old home could not be kept.

  • I agree the shingles are more charming…but obviously this house was in some serious disrepair for habitat for humanity to restore it. And like you said, they have to be maintained. It was probably better off just to get rid of them. Although faux cedar shingles could have been nicer than siding.

  • I love that this amazing house was saved! I love the history there.

  • As much as I hate to see houses in my city in disrepair, I think the “renovation” done on this house was horrendous from a historical/architectural standpoint.

  • I agree the before looks so much better.

It was probably in such disrepair it would have been cost prohibitive for Habitat to do.

In future you may comment on such things at to the City of Newburgh Architectural Review Commission which has juristicition on all exterior improvements as well as signage, streetscapes and landscaping in the cities historic districts – East End and Colonial Terrace.
