People often ask me ways they can financially support efforts to bring back the City of Newburgh. Yesterday, a campaign was announced to raise funds to bring back to life an empty lot that is located at the corner of Broadway and Liberty Street by Safe Harbors of the Hudson.
They are calling it Safe Harbors Green, an innovative, green space in the center of Newburgh’s downtown that will serve as a fully accessible urban park; an animated gathering place for markets, festivals, public art and performance, community connection, contemplation and recreation.
An Indiegogo page has been set up to collect the remaining donations needed to make this park a reality. You can also donate through the Safe Harbors website, or by mailing them a check.
Construction is scheduled to begin May 2, and completion is anticipated by the fall. The future park is in a critical location for the City of Newburgh. Located at the crossroads of the two major streets of Newburgh’s revitalization, this park will fully represent what it has naturally become – a gathering place in the heart of the city. Make your donation today!
It’s been a while since plans for a skate park in Newburgh have been mentioned, but the skate culture runs very strong in Newburgh. Nothing says that more than the plans to create a Newburgh Skate Lounge. Newburgh local, Melzina Canigan-Izzard, feels like the skate lounge has a lot of local support which will hopefully translate into donations to the Indiegogo campaign. The campaign will be made live at their fundraising party, January 16, 7:30pm, at Ms. Fairfax 188 Liberty.
A location has not yet been secured, but the plan is for the skate lounge to be a combination of a restaurant and skate shop. Melzina was born and raised in Newburgh and has seen things starting to take on a different tone in Newburgh. “There is a different kind of coming together this time around,” she says. The goal is to keep the momentum going. She has noticed a rise in new residents who really care about Newburgh. “It’s a special place that needs special people.”

In celebration of the bicentennial of Downing’s birth, the Downing Park Planning Committee invites the public to an autumn in the park wine tasting which will feature seasonal appetizers along with a selection of wines from Newburgh’s Palate Wines & Spirits.
This festive event will be held on Sunday, October 18th at the Downing Park Shelter House from 3:00p.m. till 6:00p.m. Attendees are kindly asked to donate $30.00 for support of Downing Park.
The City of Newburgh is proud to be a participant in the ongoing renewal of the park. With the recent hiring of staff, the City looks forward to the upcoming development of community gardens and green houses in the park. So, come and enjoy the magnificent autumn color in the park and help support one of Newburgh’s greatest and most historic institutions.
Newburgh is proud to include among its native sons, Andrew Jackson Downing, who is considered the chief inspiration for the American conservationist movement. He served as mentor to the two greatest conservationists of the late 19th century, Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux, and it was they who named Newburgh’s largest public park after Downing.
Something I have been vocal about in the past is the desire to have a bookstore in the City of Newburgh. They might be a dying breed, but bookstore alternatives are becoming very popular. I’m working on my own project for something like this in the Spring. In the meanwhile, I’m so pleased the Fullerton Center Free Community Book Exchange has been formed! You can visit starting this Sunday, 297 Grand Street.
Inspired by a fan of Fullerton who needed to give away a lifetime collection of hundreds family books, Michael Green offered the Carriage House at Fullerton as a Give and Take situation: A Fullerton Center Free Community Book Exchange.
The left bay of the carriage house was cleared out, tables and shelves were donated augmented by tables made by Jeff and via word of mouth, and boxes of hardbacks and paperback books started pouring in. Newburgh neighbors revealed: the book subject range was astonishing. Testing the waters a soft opening was held on Saturday. People brought books, people took books; most did both. People stayed and chatted about books, people sat down and ruminated about books—a word as well as a book exchange.
So, off we go! The Fullerton Cultural Center Community Free Book Exchange will now be open for bring ins and take-outs on Sundays from noon-3, starting with this Sunday, October 11th. Located at 297 Grand Street.
As an extra, the CBE is also collecting children’s books for Amina Chaudri, a librarian and author who, with her son and wagon walks though the streets of Newburgh giving out books to local kids. A collection box for Amina is in the Carriage House. Please join us this Sunday!
