The Heights

Newburghs most famous row house is for sale. Blogger, Anna Dorfman and her husband Evan, are selling their beloved home in the Heights for a list of reasons. All of them are personal and have nothing to do with Newburgh. If somehow you don’t know her blog, Door Sixteen, it is a very popular blog that Anna used to chronicle the renovations of her home, as well as other topics. She’s pretty much the reason I created Newburgh Restoration. The house is the quintessential row home that has been tastefully updated and lovingly preserved. It’s been featured on countless websites and magazines. Not to mention this is a great block in Newburgh and has wonderful views from the Bluff of the Hudson River. This is a pretty single-family home right on the Bluff in the Heights. The interior looks tastefully updated, but still preserved. The views speak for themselves. There is a lot that could be done here to spruce up the exterior with landscaping etc, and there is a surprise in the back – a very large garage that could fit at least 3 cars, if not more. Houses on the Bluff are quite desirable, so it will be interesting to see how long this one lasts.

Here’s an intriguing stone house at the south end of Liberty Street in the Heights. The stone was more than likely added later, it’s even on the garage in the back. However, inside there are impressive original details including columns, a fireplace, stairwell and stained glass window. To the right there is a driveway (a big bonus in the winter time). Overall, you could live here and make changes to the rest of the house as you went along (although I don’t see any bathroom photos). The house next door to the right is up for sale as well.

This is a property that is a true multifamily. The listing says it’s a 4-family property featuring all separate utilities. Apartments in these buildings usually are quite large with dinning rooms (if they haven’t also been converted to bedrooms). Ideally, I would have taken a picture and featured it as a Rescue Me home. But fortunately it is on the market, which makes it relatively easier to buy. If you aren’t sure about Renwick Street, check out this couple who just moved there. There is a myriad of changes needed to revitalize Newburgh, and one of them is definitely more homeowner occupancy. So, check it out, see if this property is right for you.

The curved edge of this house has always been an intriguing feature. Does anybody know why they would build such a wall? This property on Benkard is in a rough spot, but it is a short sale, starting at $30,000. Something to keep in mind if you are interested is the $1.75 million cluster deal of Benkard homes on the market.

Here’s an update on a home that has been off and on the market in the Heights. I have shown this home in 2010 and 2012. The exterior hasn’t changed much, but it seems new photos have been provided of the interior. The property was bought after being vacant for a while with some improvements made. Two years ago it was listed for $129k, now it has dropped considerably. This house still needs work, but it is in a good section of the Heights. The neighbor to the left takes exceptional care of their property as do a few other neighbors, and you are just a block walk away from the Bluff.
