Spies at Washington’s HQ


Washington’s Headquarters celebrates the badge of Military Merit. Spies here! Spies there!! Spies just about everywhere!!! Who was a Patriot? Who was a Tory? Who played both ends against the middle? In short, who could you trust during the Revolutionary War? For the answer to these and some other intriguing questions, come to Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site on Saturday, August 7th at 2:00 PM. You’ll hear Alexander Rose, author of “Spies for Washington” unravel some of the mystery surrounding this cloak and dagger subject.


Adding to the enjoyment of the day, a member of the 5th New York Regiment of re-enactors will portray Daniel Bissell, a Badge of Military Merit recipient. Now if you’re wondering what spying has to do with the Badge of Military Merit – guess no more! General Washington ordered the Badge for Bissell acknowledging his exceptional bravery while spying in British-held New York. So, that’s the last piece of the puzzle. Or is it??
