These kids created a petition for a skateboard park on NY Skateboarding.com. According to the site, they started off as a group of just 10, and now they are 60+ of all ages. Their petition titled, “NEWBURGH CITY COUNCIL: Build a Skatepark” has already gotten more than 330 signatures. It looks like someone was listening. Now the city is requesting RFQ’s from design firms. Here is what the city is looking for:

The City of Newburgh Skate Board Park Plaza is to be located on the western portion of Delano Hitch Recreation Park, west of the Activity Center and South of the Playground. It is adjacent to Route 32. Total square footage is approximately 12,000 or .27 acres.

The City anticipates a facility to be installed as a Skate Board Park Plaza design style with “street‐style” terrain. The City encourages areas to be poured in concrete which will cater to several demographics of skaters and skill levels. The area must be aesthetically pleasing, incorporate passive areas and be distinctive to Newburgh. The City seeks to create a unique destination which can be marketed to the regional skating community. Design considerations shall include transition ramps, rail skating, stair casings, bowl style design and street style terrain. The area will not be designed to accommodate scooters or trick bikes.

The design must take into consideration the ability to segment and phase the construction of the skate plaza.

Here is the official announcement for more details. Go Newburgh skateboarders!

There was an exciting article that appeared in the THR yesterday. The article focuses on Ted Doering and his recent acquisition of the Resnick Mattress Factory we informed you about during the summer. Now plans are coming to light as Doering has expressed interest in turning the old 1920’s factory into an indoor mall. He has acquired a few properties over the past few months and he has hopeful plans for all of them. He is carefully choosing tenants for the properties he owns. It seems he has the right vision to keep the momentum of Liberty Street going.

In January of 2012 the City of Newburgh presented a new streetscape design for Chambers Street. Late in the summer of this year we started to see the realization of these plans. The perimeter of the area targeted for revitalization is between Chambers and Dubois and Broadway and South Street. Improvements will be paid for through the City’s Federal Housing and Urban Development Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding.

New parking spots and crosswalks have been painted and bumpouts have been installed; creating a better environment for pedestrians and cars. I was down here recently for the Queen of the Hudson Music Series at 9-11 Chambers Street, and wow what a change this block is seeing. There is still more to come with the land bank soon to rehabilitate and occupy 2 vacant buildings on this same block as well.

What do you think of the new street design? There are plenty of amazing properties still up for sale on Chambers.

Broadway is considered Newburgh’s Main Street. It’s quite sad since many storefronts are dilapidated and run down like the ones pictured above. The City is now accepting proposals for it’s storefront improvement program from qualified architectural firms. You can find out more here, or contact James Slaughter, jslaughter@cityofnewburgh-ny.gov.  Qualified firms shall submit four (4) copies of the proposal to the James Slaughter, City of Newburgh, Planning and Development Department, 83 Broadway, Newburgh, NY, no later than four o’clock p.m. (4:00 p.m.) eastern time on June 5, 2013.

“The Program provides participating owners of commercial and mixed use buildings within the targeted area with funding to repair and/or renovate building façade, more specifically storefronts.  The maximum loan amount (or scope of work) available will be $10,000 – $15,000 per building or one-half the cost of improvements, whichever is less.

City of Newburgh anticipates working with approximately 10 property owners as a part of Phase I.   Phase I projects will focus on storefront windows, doors, signage, awnings, and lighting.  Proposed façade improvements will be required to conform to the historic character of the buildings and neighborhood.   Parts of Broadway are located within Newburgh’s Historic District, those façade improvements and projects will be reviewed and are subject to approval by the City’s Architectural Review Commission (ARC).  Designs should be consistent with the architecture of the Broadway Commercial Corridor.

It is intended that this Program will commence July 2013, with all required approvals secured and proposed construction within 60 days.  Construction will be completed by November 15, 2013.”
